Root Canal Treatment (Endodontic Treatment)
Root canal treatment is a procedure that involves removing the nerve tissue, called the pulp, from the innermost part of the tooth, followed by widening and disinfecting the canals inside the tooth roots, and filling the widened canals.
The duration of root canal treatment can vary depending on factors such as the condition of the tooth, the severity of the infection, and the position of the tooth. Generally, root canal treatment can be completed in a few sessions. During the first session, the inside of the tooth is opened, infected tissues are removed, and the root canal is cleaned. In the second session, the root canals are filled and the top of the tooth is closed. A third session may be necessary to complete the treatment.
Eating after Root Canal Treatment
Do not eat while under anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia (numbing) is usually used during root canal treatment. Eating should be avoided until the numbness wears off, as there is a possibility of accidentally biting and damaging soft tissues such as the tongue, lip, and cheek. It is also important to avoid consuming excessively hot or cold foods that could damage the soft tissues. Eat soft foods. After root canal treatment, your tooth may be sensitive, so it is recommended that you avoid hard and sticky foods. Instead, consume soft and easily chewable foods.
What are the signs of needing endodontic treatment?
Signs to look for include pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, tenderness to touch and chewing, discoloration of the tooth, and swelling, drainage and tenderness in the lymph nodes as well as nearby bone and gum tissues. Sometimes, however, there are no symptoms.
What to be careful about after root canal treatment?
Never use your teeth, especially those that have undergone root canal treatment, to crack open unshelled nuts or pistachios, break unpopped popcorn kernels, or try to open a bottle cap with your teeth. Do not apply unusual forces that could potentially break your root canal-treated tooth, which is more susceptible to breaking than a healthy tooth under such forces.
Will I need a crown?
Following root canal treatment, the tooth will be weaker than it was before. We may advise that an onlay or crown is needed to restore the tooth, which could otherwise break. Over time, a root-filled tooth may darken. If there is any discoloration, there are several treatment options available to restore the tooth’s natural appearance. We will discuss these options with you as required.
